Second, the idler assembly that keeps tension on the belt. A worn idler lets the belt slip under heavy, wet loads — the washer spins weakly or stops mid-cycle.

Third, the transmission. It connects the motor to the agitator and basket. When its gears wear, the motor runs but nothing turns. It's the biggest-ticket washer repair — which is exactly why we test the belt and idler before ever quoting one.
